GARLAND’S STORY

Who else could this yellow be named after, than the one and only, the original gay icon, Ms. Judy Garland.

I decided to include her name in the list of colourways because it was her death, or rather her funeral that sparked off one of the most important events in the history of the LGBT movement.

The night of her funeral, June 27th, 1969, huge numbers of gay men and other members of the LGBT community flocked to the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, then and now, a gay bar.

In the early hours of June 28th, the bar was raided by the police.
Usually quiescent, the folk gathered there that night had had enough. They rioted, and the gay liberation movement was born.
The gay community may have been mourning the loss of an icon, but it found its voice, and started the ball rolling that gives us the equality we can enjoy in so many places today. It mustn’t be forgotten though, much as many do, that the journey towards equality is far from over.
