MONTAGNIER’S STORY

In the early 1980s, French virologist Luc Montagnier was working at the Pasteur Institute in France, with a team of researchers who were trying to identify the cause of AIDS, the mysterious killer disease that seemed to be targeting young gay men. He found the virus that would later become known as HIV while doing a lymph-node biopsy on a sample from a patient who had AIDS. This was in 1983.

In 2008, he and another scientist shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering and identifying the HIV virus, and paved the way for one of medicine’s most extraordinary success stories: the treatment and control of HIV in the human body, to the point where I, today, as a man living with HIV, will have the same life expectancy as the rest of the general population, and I cannot pass the virus on to anyone else.

I am grateful to Luc Montagnier, and all those who have followed him, every single day.
